+++++ Breakdown Newsletter 1.0 ++++ 29 August 1998 +++ Breakdown: http://www.the-fringe.com/brook ++ Discussion: http://www.the-fringe.com/brook/list.html + Post to: breakdown@makelist.com ++++++ In this issue: +++++ About this newsletter ++++ Breaking News +++ Site updates ++ MakeList outage + Current list membership +++++ About this newsletter God morning all, Although this list was founded with the intention of creating a forum for discussion of all matters Michael Brook, it recently occurred to me that it would function just as well as a means to distribute a newsletter. So, unless anyone objects, I will publish an occasional newsletter telling of news, updates to the site, and anything else that might be of interest to this crowd. Please let me know your thoughts at clo@fringedigital.com or bring them up for discussion on the list. We've covered a lot of ground in our first few weeks: + deconstructing Star Rise + dissing Albino Alligotor + picking out the players on Damage + uncovering the cult favorite Dream We got off to a pretty good start, and then things quieted down. Perhaps a newsletter might provide an occasional gentle nudge, to remind everyone the Breakdown list is still active. Personally, I have high hopes for it. The range of discussion is huge - all the issues, genres, and artists connected with Brook, literally, or by association. Have at it! ++++ Breaking News Robert Fripp has recently wrested control of the DGM website and has begun posting regular journal entries. Although his accounts of his daily activities are somewhat more in-depth than may be comfortable to read, he did let slip this exciting news on 18 August 1998: "Virgin may re-release Sylvian / Fripp's "Damage" when David's new album (reportedly a triumph) has been released. "Damage" was originally released in limited edition, with a view to full release later. David was unhappy with the mixing (by David Bottrill and myself) and considered remixing it himself. "The First Day" (our studio album) was essentially produced by David and represents his view of our relationship; "Damage" is my own perspective. The Sylvian - Fripp - Gunn live trio, of which I have bootlegs and archive DATs, was a stunning live outfit: in a dangerous place, endangered, and walking the plank ... It is unikely that David would allow that archive to be released. I look forward, keenly, to hearing his first solo record for many years." link: Discipline Global Mobile http://www.discipline.co.uk +++ Site updates New images and information in the discographies on a 1987 Jon Hassell album called The Surgeon of the Nightsky Restores Dead Things by the Power of Sound. Featuring guitar by Michael Brook on four tracks. Sergei Kantere (from Moscow) posted about this album some time ago. Sergei: sorry it took me so long to track it down. To be honest, this is the first Hassell album I've heard (you might notice the Breakdown discography is rather thin on Hassell info). I liked it immediately - and was stunned to find it a direct decendant of Brook's own Hybrid (1985). Any Hassell afficionados out there care to comment here or write a review for Breakdown? Perhaps clue me in on further Hassell albums to track down? link: The Surgeon of the Nightsky Restores Dead Things by the Power of Sound http://www.the-fringe.com/brook/disc/surgeon.html Also, I've actually updated the search index for the first time in two months. Now the bored and the curious may calculate exactly how many times the three letters "e", "n" and "o" appear in Breakdown, in that order (hint: a LOT). link: Search Breakdown http://www.the-fringe.com/brook/search.html ++ MakeList outage MakeList is the free service that powers this discussion list. One of its great features is that its online archives also function as a fully-featured BBS. Great, that is, until it breaks down. MakeList recently informed all listowners that their online archives crapped out on them. So if any of you have visited the archives/BBS recently only to found the cupboard bare, go easy on them. They're nice people, really. MakeList is planning to restore all postings from backups. link: Breakdown archives/BBS http://www.findmail.com/list/breakdown/ + Current list membership The Breakdown discussion list currently has 42 subscribed participants. There is ambition. Regards, Chad ___________________________ Chad Ossman home: clo@fringedigital.com work: chado@weblab.org web: www.the-fringe.com
